Comic book company IDW announces new TV division
October 20, 2013
IDW Publishing, a lesser-known comic book publisher, announced last Thursday that it will create a TV division called IDW Entertainment.
The new division is intended to create shows based on IDW comic books, which tend to focus less on superheroes, ala Marvel and DC, but supernatural and horror stories i.e. 30 Days of Night and Locke & Key.
“By financing its own television projects, the company is now poised to become a major player across all media platforms,” said Rick Jacobs, a Circle of Confusion producer overseeing the new division, in a press release. “Our hope is that we will be able to … move faster to get these projects from the comic books to being on the air, as opposed to getting mired down in the long development process.”
The news follows Marvel’s recent expansion into television with Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and hinted expansion into lesser-known superhero properties.
As a nerd, I’m particularly happy with the announcement, considering IDW tends not to fall into the more repetitive elements of superhero stories.
